Taking the step to start counselling is an act of courage and self-care

It’s completely normal to feel nervous or unsure about what to expect. Even as a counsellor, I remember feeling apprehensive about my own first sessions—wondering what to talk about and whether my concerns were “worthy” of counselling. Once seated in that safe space, though, the process felt natural, and the benefits were transformative. This guide is here to help you prepare for your first counselling session and feel more confident about taking this important step.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is about building trust and getting to know each other. It’s a chance for you to share your story at your own pace while I learn about your challenges, strengths, and goals. I’ll also explain how the counselling process works, answer any questions you might have, and together, we’ll start laying the foundation for meaningful change.

Setting Your Goals

Before the session, take a moment to reflect on what you’d like to achieve. Are you navigating a specific challenge like anxiety, grief, or relationship concerns? Or do you feel stuck and need clarity or direction? Whatever the reason, we’ll collaborate to identify goals that feel important and meaningful to you.

Preparing for Your Session

If your session is online, choose a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable and can speak freely. For in-person sessions, arrive a few minutes early to settle in. You don’t need to bring anything except yourself, but if you have questions or thoughts, feel free to jot them down beforehand.

How Counselling Can Help

Counselling provides a space to unpack your story, explore patterns in your life, and develop new insights. Together, we’ll use approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Narrative Therapy to uncover your strengths, build resilience, and create actionable steps toward change. My goal is to empower you to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and clarity.

What to Expect Moving Forward

Your first session is just the beginning. As we continue, we’ll refine your goals, explore strategies, and make steady progress toward meaningful changes in your life. My role is to provide support, empathy, and the tools you need to feel heard, supported, and empowered.

Closing Thoughts

Choosing to start counselling shows incredible strength and a commitment to your growth. Whether you’re seeking clarity, relief, or personal development, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
